SKIP2BFIT comes to Grenville

On Wednesday 22nd April we were lucky to have Paul from Skip2bfit come to our school and work with us on a new fitness scheme that is in schools – skipping. Skip2bfit aims to promote, develop and implement quality skipping and fitness programmes, in association with youth organisations, into education. “Skip2bfit works because it challenges people to improve in all areas of their lives. It is suitable for team and confidence building across gender, needs and ages", John McCormack, Founder and CEO.

It is a cross-curricular skipping programme incorporating science, numeracy, IT and healthy eating.  Paul worked with each class on different skipping skills and challenges. Each child was given a special rope that counts the skips and automatically sets a challenge for the next time they skip! Grenville school children all enjoyed skipping and setting themselves personal challenges. The special skipping ropes are on sale in school are are bound to be next craze on our playground. “I didn’t think I could do so many!” ,“I thought is was great - I wanted to skip for longer,” “what fun!” are just some of the comments from the children about the day. After the children had finished skipping they were all given some blueberries to enjoy and reminded about the messages of healthy eating and the benefits to them and their learning if they did regular exercise. We are looking forward to carrying on the skipping in a 6 week skipping challenge.

On your bike - Grenville children can leave the car at home...

We are now the proud owners of a new cycle storage system.  The new cycle storage system has come as a result of being a Level Three Travel Planning school. This means we are committed to helping children travel safely to school and encourage sustainable methods of transport. We have recently been re awarded the award for a second year. The ‘status’ comes with funding and we selected to purchase and install this rather expensive cycle storage unit. Now it is in place further cycle training will be provided for the children so that they can safely cycle to school and we will look into scooter training for the younger members of our school community.

As you can see from the picture it has greatly enhanced an area of our school grounds and we are all looking forward to seeing the bikes parked in it. Our travel initiatives link into our Eco School ones because all of the time we are encouraging children to make sensible choices about the way they travel to school and over time it might encourage them to leave the car at home, reducing the pollution and congestion linked to the school run. Maybe it will encourage some staff to cycle to school too?
